Ladysmith, formerly known as Oyster Harbour, is a village in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, on the east of Vancouver Island. It has been gaining popularity since the late 90s because of its proximity to Vancouver, Victoria and Howe Sound and the exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities for water sports enthusiasts. History of Ladysmith
The history of Ladysmith dates back thousands of years with the Stz’uminus people being the first inhabitants. They lived around the harbour and established fishing camps. Their way of life was threatened when the Europeans arrived. Now they live on reserves and work with the town of Ladysmith to restore the harbour and create their own independent nation.
Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish, who came to Vancouver Island to work in the mines, discovered the town near Oyster Harbour and in 1900 named it Ladysmith after hearing about the end of the siege of Ladysmith from the Boer War in South Africa.
Ladysmith, once predominantly a coal industry, closed their coal mines in 1930 due to lack of demand. It led to many people leaving the town. After 1933, when the Rockefeller Foundation sold the forest, a logging and railway company started shipping logs. Logging helped with economic recovery in the late 1940s. Logging operations continued until 1986. What remains today are two sawmills that still export logs through the harbour.
The population of Ladysmith now stands at around 10,000 people. Ladysmith has done much work and takes pride in maintaining and preserving the rich history today known as 'Heritage By The Sea’.

Heritage Artifacts Walk: As the name suggests, this trail takes you down a path to the history of Ladysmith. The trail links from downtown to the waterfront and Transfer Beach Park, and thus, follows the history of coal mining to forestry to rail to marine.

Heritage Buildings Walk: This trail takes you back in time, from the turn of the last century when buildings were brought in from Nanaimo, carrying with them its legacy.

Holland Creek Trail: This trail, alongside Holland Creek, is 5.8km and showcases Crystal Falls and Colliery Dams.
