The quaint island is 180 kilometers and takes only about 50 minutes to get from one end of Salt Spring Island to the other. Three ferry terminals are located here that allows the residents and travelers access to the other villages that make up part of Salt Spring Island.
Granges in the main town and have eclectic shops, restaurants, art galleries, and other attractions. It is centrally located on the east side and overlooks a marina and the Salish Sea. There is also a market that is run on Saturdays where great homemade items can be found.
Fulford village in the south end of the island has a small selection of great shops, a local grocery store, restaurant, and cafes. The ferry to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island is found in Fulford as well as the connection to Tsawwassen in Vancouver. Traveling to Sidney and Victoria is also done from this village.
Vesuvius Bay is one of the sunniest spots on the island making it a popular swimming location. The Seaside Restaurant has some great fish and chips as well as the Vesuvius Store where essentials can be purchased. Vesuvius is also where you catch a ferry to Crofton and from there you can head to Nanaimo and a connecting ferry to Horseshoe Bay, Duncan, Cowichan Bay, and the rest of Vancouver Island.
Fernwood is a popular spot in the northeast of the island. In Fernwood, you'll find the Fernwood Cafe, Fernwood Dock, and Beach. Along the North End Road, there are some great little B&Bs with views out over Galiano Island and Active Pass.
Whether your ideal home is a cabin in the woods or a spacious ocean-front residence, there are many options to choose from. The largest market for arts and crafts is the Centennial Park Saturday Market where you can shop from April until September. There are over 140 vendors selling items that must have been made, baked, or grown in Salt Springs Island. On Tuesdays, there is a produce-only market that sells wood-oven-baked bread, soft goat's cheese with truffles, fresh tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers, and a bottle of sparkling apple-cider kefir. There are also two Christmas craft fairs, one at Beaver Point Hall and the other at Fulford Hall.
The Ruckle Provincial Park is 529 hectares and has seven kilometers of shoreline, protected forests, coves, and farmland. The Park is known as the jewel in Salt Spring Island’s crown. As soon as you drive in you will spot chickens, turkeys, and sheep roaming around. There is a great area for picnicking and 78 campsites by the waters of Sanson Channel.
What is more exhilarating than watching these majestic animals in their natural environment? The killer, humpback, minke, gray, and fin whales can all be spotted in Salt Spring Island’s water as they seek out food and migrate. Burgoyne and Ruckle Provincial Parks are the two spots onshore where tourists often spy a blow spout or fin. There are whale-watching tours also available by experienced marine naturalists who know all the best locations to see the world’s largest mammal up close and personal.
With an elevation of approximately 600 meters, Mount Maxwell Provincial Park offers a breathtaking view into Fulford Valley, the surrounding Gulf Island, the U.S San Juan Islands, Vancouver Island, and mainland B.C. Take a hike through the trails that lead along the cliff’s edge as well through the main park where you can experience one of the highest points on the Island.
Public education in Spring Salt Island is offered by the Gulf Island School District, which provides top-rated education to students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The educational district creates an environment where all students meet their fullest potential through a stimulating academic program.
The Gulf Island School District is located in the Salish Sea and includes five island communities. They are as follows: Salt Spring, Pender, Galiano, Mayne, and Saturna Islands. The Gulf Island School District serves approximately 1,500 students and thriving International and French Immersion programs.

To reach Sidney from Salt Spring Island you would need to take the ferry from Fulford village in the south end of the island. Many of the residents in Sidney are senior citizens and the total population is approximately 11,583.
It is a popular tourist destination in the spring and summer months and is the only Canadian port-of-call in the Washington State Ferries system with ferries going from Sidney to San Juan Island and Anacortes.
Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea Aquarium is located on Sidney’s waterfront and is a hands-on aquarium. There are over 160 species of marine life, a Coast Salish art collection, and a mammal artifact exhibit.
Vesuvius Bay is where you would catch the ferry from Salt Spring Island to Vancouver Island.
