Bates Beach, which lies on the coastal side of Merville, is known for some of the best saltwater fishing on the island, particularly when it comes to salmon. The sheltered location and the lack of strong currents found in the northern section of the Strait of Georgia provide the ideal conditions for groups of salmon. 

Courtenay: As the largest community and only city in the Comox Valley area, Courtenay is home to over 25,000 people. Ideally situated between many well known villages and towns, including Comox, Cumberland, and Royston, those living in or visiting Courtenay have many options to venture into other areas of the eastern region of Vancouver Island. 

Courtenay showcases a beautiful landscape of sea and land and adds a rustic-urban  atmosphere to the areas on this section of the island. Campbell River: Located along the south end of Discovery Passage, Campbell River is approximately 30 kilometres north of Black Creek. This beautiful little city is often referred to as the "Salmon Capital of the World" and is a major contributor to Vancouver's fishing industry.
