Throughout all modern human history, very few things remain unchanged. From the way we communicate to the uses of technology, almost everything about the daily life of a human is nothing like how it was 100 years ago… One thing that has always prevailed through the ages, however, is art. Even dating as far back as up to 40,000 years ago, artwork from almost all eras still exists somewhere in the world.
Nanaimo is no stranger to the story of art, and today we’re going to take a look at the best places in this fantastic city where you can admire art.
1. Art 10 Gallery
Located in the town center, you’re likely going to come across this one whilst out on a shopping trip or simply passing through town. Small though it is, it still houses some of the most powerful and intriguing paintings found in the area.
What’s its’ history?
Art 10 Gallery was first opened in 1983, starting out with – rather appropriately – a team of just 10 artists. Now, almost 40 years later, Art 10 Gallery has a team of 25 talented artists who are the painters behind all artwork showcased. So, if you’re hoping to find artwork from ancient times, this may not be the place for you - however, if you are interested in local talent, Art 10 Gallery is the perfect spot.
What’s it like there?
As briefly mentioned earlier, Art 10 Gallery is relatively small. It’s a store in a shopping center, so you’d be able to go around and view all the artwork within a matter of minutes. The front is all open, so you may even be able to glimpse the artwork just by walking past.
Why should I go here?
Art 10 Gallery has one standout feature that most other art galleries do not: You can buy the artwork. Available as framed photos, fresh on canvases, or as cards and postcards, if you see a painting that particularly invokes feelings of happiness in you, you can buy a copy of it to take home for yourself.
2. Gallery Merrick
According to Nanaimo locals, Gallery Merrick is the “main” and most popular art gallery in the city, and we’d be foolish not to include it somewhere on this list as such.
What’s its’ history?
Although having only been open for three years, Gallery Merrick quickly rose to fame due to its’ size and variety of paintings available. Rather than being one team like our previous contender, Gallery Merrick accepts submissions from Canadian artists across the country and is seeking to promote those who work as artists to support their families in daily life.
What’s it like there?
The gallery is built with a rather retro/vintage vibe in mind. There is a large and open wooden hall on which hundreds of smaller paintings are hung up on the walls, whilst the rest of the gallery branches off into hallways and other small rooms where more amazing artwork can be found.
Why should I go here?
Whether you’re Canadian in origin or just visiting Nanaimo, Gallery Merrick perfectly captures the essence of the Canadian spirit and will give you a fantastic yet artistic insight into what its’ culture is really like.
3. Artisans’ Gallery
This entry is a little different from our previous two – as opposed to showcasing paintings and canvasses, this gallery is more orientated towards pottery and skillfully designed artifacts.
What’s its’ history?
Without an official website, little is known about the origins of this place. However, it is known that, as time went on, Artisans’ Gallery branched out into showcasing more forms of art beyond pottery such as jewelry, woodwork, knitwork, and even paintings, much like our other entries on this list.
What’s it like there?
Artisans’ Gallery is a small studio-style shop as opposed to a large viewing gallery, though its’ purpose is ultimately the same. The majority of artwork comes from local artists, so if you are looking to specifically capture the spirit of Nanaimo – as opposed to British Colombia in general – then this is certainly the place to go. Aside from what has already been mentioned, you can also find artisan, photography, basketry, and felting artwork pieces here.
Why should I go here?
Staring at paintings for hours on end isn’t for everybody, yet still, wanting to understand culture and history through artwork can be. Artisans’ Gallery is perfect for this situation, as considering how the studio is both relatively small and also contains a large variety of artistic items, this is the least likely place on this list where any member of your party will find themselves bored – They may even take inspiration and submit an entry of their own.
4. Patricia Banks’ Fine Art
Receiving the highest rating of all the art galleries on this list (5 stars out of 5 on Google and Trustpilot), this art studio contains artwork from artists of all different mediums, but mainly by, rather appropriately, a talented artist named Patricia Banks.
What’s its’ history?
Hailing from Canada, Patricia Banks is a landscape painter who specializes in oil and acrylic artwork. She is well-traveled and an affiliate of the British Columbia Art Teachers’ Association, after having graduated from the University of Victoria. Though no opening date is given, Patricia is known to have run her studio for many years.
What’s it like there?
The gallery houses many workshops and exhibits, extending off a main studio from which artwork can be purchased. Acrylic classes, private lessons, and other workshops are all available for certain prices.
Why should I go here?
To admire and understand art is one thing, but to create yourself is just something else entirely. We recommend this studio simply because of Patricia Banks’ amazing background and how she is willing to pass her knowledge on to students via private workshops and other courses. So if you’re looking to become an artist yourself, this is certainly the place for you to visit.
5. Nanaimo Ceramic Arts
Going off the same branch as our previous entry, our final spot on this list goes to another place where you can learn to master the skill of becoming an artist yourself as well, though the key difference is that, whilst Patricia Banks may be able to teach you how to paint, this spot will teach how to spin clay in pottery classes.
What’s its’ history?
Open for an unknown number of years, Nanaimo Ceramic Arts accepts applications from all and will hire those who have the relevant knowledge of the materials and processes required to create artifacts. This center also pays homage to its’ previous artists in residence on a page on their website, including images of the objects they brought to life.
What’s it like there?
With Nanaimo Ceramic Arts being centered more around the creation of art rather than the showcasing of it, you’ll find this gallery is decorated more like a workroom as opposed to a studio or exhibition.
Why should I go here?
We recommend Nanaimo Ceramic Arts to those who are looking to create physical artwork such as mugs or vases or simply just wanting to buy them. If you’re on holiday in Nanaimo, then these cheap, quick, and easy classes will certainly be a good way to occupy your time.

Much like British Colombia in general, Nanaimo has a lot going for it. Cool swimming spots, delicious breakfast spots, and now, beautiful art galleries.
