Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia, Canada is one of those places that is just one of a kind all the way around. Located on Vancouver Island on the edges of Shawnigan Lake, this lake town is truly stunning. The village boasts a population of around 8,000 so it is certainly not a big city, but has a higher population than many of the smaller towns in the region.
This is a popular recreational destination because of the lake and as such there is a healthy mix of both larger lake properties and those that are older and a bit smaller and better established. The village is often used as a vacation spot for those that live in the city and want something a bit out of the way for the summer months.
There are tons of recreational cabins and lakefront properties that are only used during part of the year. Shawnigan Lake began as a mill town and the lake was used to help move trees that had been felled and that were on their way to the mill and to buyers. Shawnigan Lake borders the communities of Cobble Hill and Milly Bay and is perfect for anyone looking for that perfect spot that has the views, the atmosphere, and the recreational opportunities as well.
There is a museum in town that is run by the Shawnigan Lake Historical Society and there are a few beaches, a few local businesses as well as coffee shops. The north-west end of the village is situated at the north west part of the lake and the large lakeside park is in this area as well. The south end of the lake however is not that developed and is dotted with several farms as well as hiking trails and a more rural feel overall.
Those that want to travel to the bigger city to do shopping can go to Duncan as it is very close. This is a beautiful area that would be perfect for either a summer home or your new forever home.
